The Ambassadors detail

This copy is a detail from Hans Holbein the Younger’s paint The Ambassadors. I chose Jean de Dinteville’s portrait to copy.

Instead of putting a colored ground on my panel I choose to leave the white and start with a grisaille of green umber thus omitting the bistre layer. Once the values were painting I then moved right into the dead color layer.

This painting is still in progress and has moved forward quickly.
